Permit Fly of the Year

"Sandy Merkin"

Permit Crab Fly.

This fly has evolved into a winning pattern for Permit on the Key West flats. The photo above shows a merkin tied in tradional Del Brown style with a bit more emphasis on the tail elements. There is a combination of natural chinchilla bunny fur and splayed cree hackles extending outward from the bend of the hook. The body is tied with Aunt Lydia's rug yarn. The legs are white silly legs with red permanent marked tips. The head on this original pattern is a 5/32,6/32,7/32, or 8/32 black or brass dumbell eye to help sink the fly to the proper depth of the flat you are fishing.

Tied on a #1,or #1/0 saltwater (stainless steel) hook, this pattern is especially effective when Permit are tailing or searching for food on the mottled sand and grass flats. The fly is presented near the feeding fish so that the fish will see it as it sinks to the bottom. Stay tight to the fly by stripping your slack line. If you detect a feeding move by the fish, strip strike slowly to come tight, then play the Permit.

GOOD LUCK!!!
