Tarpon Fly of the Year

"Tarpon Sand Devil"

Tarpon Baitfish Fly.

This fly has evolved into a winning pattern for Tarpon in any water or flats condition. The photo above shows a fully tied pattern, with orange and tan the predominant colors. The key to this fly pattern is the orange butt tied into the bend of the hook and extending out about a half inch. Orange dyed calf tail or Orange dyed yak will do nicely. A few strands of orange or bronze flash are added to mimic the length of the cree feathers. The cree feathers are splayed out Tarpon style. You may palmer the collar with more cree hackles or with mouse grey bunny fur for additional contrast. The fly is finished with a Danville's orange flat waxed nylon with an eye painted or stick on eyes added before a clear epoxy coating on the head.

Tied on a #2/0 or 3/0 Gamakatsu SC-15 saltwater hook, this pattern is especially effective when Tarpon are migrating on the flats. The fly is presented in front of the cruising Tarpon so that the fish will see it as you slowly strip it away from the Tarpon. If a Permit happens by, by all means CAST and strip a little faster, as we have had success with Permit on the Sand Devil!

GOOD LUCK!!!
